Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) qualified Specialized Technology Resources Inc. (STR) in Turkey to perform testing for UL in accordance with the European Union (EU)
RoHS directive. STR, which started as a materials development and testing facility, is the oldest independent continuously operating plastics laboratory in the U.S., with 14 testing facilities worldwide.
Under the UL RoHS program, STR (Turkey) will perform chemical analyses of homogeneous materials to determine the levels of certain hazardous substances (lead, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, mercury, PBB and PBDE) that are restricted by the RoHS Directive.
"UL has had a strong relationship with STR in safety certification for more than 40 years," said David Haataja, vice president of UL's restricted substances business sector. "The qualification of the Turkey facility adds to the already strong partnership we have with STR for RoHS testing in other countries and expands UL's testing capabilities in Europe for this important directive."
A candidate lab seeking UL's RSCS qualification has to meet the following criteria:
- Access to appropriate instruments, lab standards and reagents.
- A laboratory management system that complies with ISO 17025.
- Technical competency and a full understanding of UL test methodologies.
